Photo 365 – 1/1/2010
My first photo in my attempt to do a photo365, this is the out building at a house in Marlboro. We strolled by and we kinda sketchy looking while we checked out the house. We had no appointment to see the inside, we just wanted to check out the outside and see what the neighborhood and area was like.
Overall, a nice area and even though one side of the house was on a fairly busy road, the height of the property above the road seems to cut out most noise. The house is also on a corner, but it seems like most headlights aren’t a problem either due to the property height.
I think this garage/workshop is probably one of the coolest features of the house which already has several cool features to it. I can just imagine the possibilities of this for storage of stuff, along with a nice area to work on projects without having to worry about being all cleaned up to make dinner or use the area for something else.
We are only starting the search process, and it’s highly unlikely that we would ever actually end up at this house, but you need to start somewhere!
Cooler Day… A Magical Time
Today is what is known as “Cooler Day” here at my office.
The company I work for is a small family owned operation, the 3 main people in charge are brother, sister, and father. There is something quaint and warming about cooler day because it brings back the feelings and the ambiance of “the old days”. “The Old Days” were a time when people were more than just worker bees and you felt like you were really someone at the company you worked for instead of a faceless drone spending your time working for the man who has no idea who you are or what you do.
All 3 of the main people know me, know my name, and treat me with respect. Joe, the father, comes into the office and says hello to everyone by name, and always says hello to me since he can’t get into his office without passing by my cube. He is a happy fellow who is just a ncie guy, but can certainly throw out a jab or two when he feels like it. He often jokes with our outside IT Consultant when he sees him in the office, comments like “Oh, you’re here today, must have another kid who needs to go to college now” or “I see you felt it was time to come by so you could upgrade from a 3 series to a 5 series”
So it’s a really really great place to work.
but back to Cooler Day, today is the day when everyone in the office brings a large cooler to work. No, not so that we can go pick up some beers and throw a “wicked pissah bendah” but so that the company can give everyone their Thanksgiving Day turkey. The tradition was born long ago, sometime back before the 1960’s when the original owner would give out a turkey to all the staff. Joe came to the company in 1963, and they were doing it then. He has continued the tradition since he purchased the company back in 1986. In his own words when I queried him about it this morning”
“It’s a tradition, it’s one of those traditions that reminds of the way things used to be, it’s something to hold onto and let’s people know that you are thankful for the effort and work they put into their jobs. That’s why everyone who works here gets one, as well as some of our customers and our vendors, it’s our way of saying thank you in a more personal way.”
There is a reason I like smaller companies, the paycheck might not be as big, but the people and the atmosphere of a functional small company is something that can’t be beat. Sometimes work really is about the people not just the job.
and for the record, these aren’t just frozen turkeys from some supermarket, these are some locally raised, never frozen, fresh from the farm turkeys. They are honestly the best tasting turkeys I have ever had in my life. Now I just need to figure out what to do with all my leftovers this year, I have a total of 3 people(including myself) who will be having Thanksgiving Dinner at my house, and I have a 22 pound turkey that will be cooked. HELLOOOOO Leftovers!
Super Duper Camera Fun!!
So I was trying to do a couple things with my camera over the weekend and I realized that I really can’t do them without a remote control. So to the fabulous World Wide Web I went to seek out just the right remote for what I needed, or possibly not that I needed, but might be really cool to have.
I had a feeling it wasn’t going to go well and I figured I would just look around and probably not buy anything.
That didn’t work so well for me. I ended up finding a couple of different remotes for my Canon 40D.
I had 2 main options, wired or wireless.
I came across one accessory that was really really cool, it was a Canon WFT-E3A. This is an attachment that goes onto the bottom of the camera. It has a whole bunch of features, the most obvious is that it gives you the ability to grip the camera vertically without needing to hold your hand strange. Then it’s other features include adding GPS information to the EXIF data with a Garmin or other external GPS, it also allows for wireless transmission of photos to the computer, as well as USB transfer directly to a hard drive, or even transfer through a standard RJ-45 network cable. You are also able to control the shutter from a computer externally from the camera. This accessory has it’s own battery which is identical to the battery in my camera, and it doesn’t share power with the camera, but on the downside it does cover the battery door on the camera, so it can be a pain in the ass to remove and put back on if you need to change your camera battery.
While this is probably one of the coolest toys, it isn’t really what I was looking for since I want a remote shutter button, and well, the $900 price tag isn’t exactly something I can afford for a hobby right now. Maybe when I will that Mega Millions jackpot though.
On to my other options…
I am slightly picky with my choices for camera accessories as well as with most accessories with almost anything I buy. If I can buy OEM, I will normally go with that just because I figure anything made by the same company who made the camera is probably going to work better than anything made by a third party company. Whether this is actually true or not is irrelevant, this is how I think, and I really don’t want to get into re-wiring my brain right now, or anytime for that matter.
So in looking at Canon’s products, they do make 1 wireless remote that will work with the 40D. The Wireless Controller LC-5 but it runs about $600, so yeah, that’s not going to happen.
On to the wired remote switches!
The first one I came across was the Remote Switch 60-T3. It’s a simple remote switch which controls the shutter of the camera. It ranges from $20 on ebay to $65 on the Canon site. This would totally work and suit my needs with no problem, but it does require an adapter. Hmm, an adapter, another piece of equipment to keep track of. I think I need to look further for what I want.
The next one I came across was the Remote Switch RS-80N3. This is a simple remote as well, and the reviews I was reading about it were quite good. It works exactly the same as the actual shutter button, but it’s at the end of a 2.6 foot cord. It runs for anywhere from $45 to $70 depending on where you buy it from. Definitely within the range I was looking to spend, the cord was a little short, but I am sure I can buy an extension cord without too much trouble.
I was all set to buy the RS-80N3 when I stumbled onto another remote while Googling the RS-80N3, the TC-80N3. Now this was an additional toy for the camera that I fell in love with immediately upon reading about the features it has.
First and foremost, it is a remote shutter which is what I was looking for, and it has the same cord length as the RS-80N3. It is a tad more expensive running from $110 to $160 depending where you buy it, but I found it for $120 at newegg.com, and I trust them so I went with it.
Some of the other features of this remote control.
All of these are customizable at 1 second increments from 0:0:1 up to 99:99:99(H:M:S).
Self Timer: How much time will pass between clicking the shutter button and the picture being taken.
Interval Timer: How long in between multiple shots.
Long Exposure Timer: How long the shutter will be open for a photo.
Then there is the option to set the number of photos to take, from 1-99.
Now just having these options is nice, but you can combine these options as well, so if I wanted to, I can take 15 photos at 10 second increments with an exposure of 3 seconds each; or I can set the timer to wait 15 seconds while I go run in front of it and then take 10 photos at 3 second intervals so I could change poses or facial expressions in between shots.
Also, you don’t have to put a time or frame limit on how long it will shoot, it can run indefinitely until it either runs out of battery, or there is no more storage space on the card in the camera.
So if I wanted to, I could set up this camera pointing out a window or someplace and just let it take a time lapse photo scene all day long, every 5 minutes or some other time frame.
Pretty cool if you ask me, now I just need to make some use of it, maybe the next lunar eclipse or just some night shots in general.

New Theme
Posted by nedster in Annoucements on 2009/10/01
So what do you think? Yay or Nay on the new theme? Well I am going with Yay!
This one still needs some tweaking. I like the navigation on it much better, the old one was nice and I liked the color scheme more than anything, and i may bring over some of the features as I teach myself php, css, etc. I am gonna slowly tweak this one out for better colors and images since there is a lot of white and it makes it kind of stark and plain for my tastes. Also going to end up with a custom banner at the top, but that will take a little time to get going.
I’m thinking about something like this, but it definitely needs a lot of work and some definite color changes…
So, I Have Realized I Truly Am An Addict…
So I, like many many people out there play fantasy football, baseball, hockey, basketball, NFL Pick-ems, NCAA Tournament Pick ems and I enjoy it.
While I have gotten better and no longer play fantasy PGA golf, Beat the Streak hits/HR/Wins, Fantasy NASCAR, Suvival Football, Salary Cap Football, and I only play Yahoo Fantasy games at this point, keeping up with CBS, MLB, NFL, ESPN, and other sites is just too much work…
So maybe I am on the road to a cure? Probably not though with my latest escapade…
Now, there are always different types of leagues, baseball has points, head to head, and rotisseries style leagues, and football has the same, minus rotisserie.
I have always kinda wondered what it would be like if everyone picked a team and just took players from that one team for their fantasy team, and how that would work out. Would the “best team” get the most points or win in a Head to Head lineup every week? The same as they would in a regular game?
Well, I have decided to test my theory a little bit…
I am in the process of building 2 Fantasy Football leagues, both points leagues, one for the AFC and one for the NFC. I would put them all in one league, but I am limited to only 20 teams per league, so I can’t put them all in one league, annoying, but life I guess.
So I setup the leagues the following way.
Offense:
Passing Yards – 25 per point
Passing TDs – 6 points
Interceptions – -1 point
Sack – -1
Rushing Yards – 10 per point
Rushing TDs – 6 points
Reception Yards – 10 per point
Reception TDs – 6 points
Return Yards – 50 per point
Return TDs – 6 points
1 Point Conversion – 2 points
Fumbles Lost – -2 points
Kicker
FG 0-19 – 3 points – I still don’t see how this is even possible, but that’s another story.
FG 20-29 – 3 points
FG 30-39 – 3 points
FG 40-49 – 4 points
FG 50+ – 5 points
FG Missed 30-39 – -1 point
PA Made – 1 point
PA Missed – -5 this is a gimme point, so yeah, penalize em for it.
Defense/Special Teams
Sack – 1 point
Interception – 2 points
Fumble Recovery – 2 points
TD – 6 points
Safety – 2 points
Blocked Kick – 2 points
0 points – 10 points
1-6 points – 7 points
7-13 points – 4 points
14-20 points – 1 point
21-27 points – 0 points
28-34 points – -1 point
35+ points – -4 points
I have each team setup with 2 QB, 3 RB, 4 WR, 2 TE, 1 K, 1 Def
I am going to play each team each week with the players based on their depth chart in the positions.
Fortunately, I can control all rosters through the commissioners account, but I still had to create 16 different Yahoo accounts in order to do this… but fortunately I have this domain which makes it real easy to create a whole bunch of email accounts to get this done…
Plus, I couldn’t use my normal Yahoo account for any of this, I mean, that could screw up my historical ranking if I did that by artificially inflating my success or failures, and no one wants that…
Wait… do I need to go to rehab now?
UPDATE: I said screw it and I am not doing this… it no longer sounds fun or interesting to me…
SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM
Posted by nedster in Annoucements on 2009/08/10
So yeah… SPAM is always interesting, and i know it can be pretty funny at times to just read it for the parts that are in there in an attempt to get it past SPAM filters. For some reason Spammers like to SPAM their sites and services in comment on blogs, I guess I never realized this.
Along with message board SPAM, I really can’t figure out how this can be a profitable way for someone to make money, then again I often wonder how email SPAM can really be that profitable as well, but then again I also constantly underestimate the gullibility and ignorance of our general population. So maybe this is a way that people are actually able to make money.
Well, either way, I have decided to re-post the portions of the attempted SPAM comments which were meant to try to circumvent SPAM filters, but the one SPAM filter they fail to account for is me, TheNed, the ultimate SPAM filter.

The Laurel Grille and Bar
Posted by nedster in Entertainment, Food, Opinion on 2009/08/03
This was not my first time at the Laurel Grill and Bar, and it is still not going to be my last time either. As it always has in the past, the meal exceeded my expectations and was a delightful treat for the taste buds.
I had only previously been to the Laurel on the weekend while taking my mother to a show, or celebrating a birthday with family. So a Thursday night experience was a new one for me, I felt a little foolish when we arrived and said we had a reservation. The restaurant was less than half full. Not really surprising though but better to have been safe than sorry, I know if we did not have a reservation the place would have been packed and we never would have gotten a table.
I had a tasty cocktail called a pink lemonade to start off the meal with, I forget what exactly was in it, but it tasted great so that’s all that matters. Then we had some calamari, which was very good as well it tasted extremely fresh.. I would have skipped the banana peppers that were mixed in, but I was easily able to pick around them.
For dinner, I had the lobster risotto and Kate had the stuffed pork loin, and they were both awesome. The pork loin was stuffed with italian sausage, onions, and cheese. The risotto had lobster, asparagus, fresh tomato, sun dried tomato, and Parmesan cheese. I really liked how they cut the asparagus up into tiny pieces making it part of the meal instead of putting it on presentation style by laying 2 or 3 pieces on top of the risotto, it was also cooked perfectly by still being crisp instead of the over mushy that so many places end up having.
The bartender was a bit loud, and I think a bit tipsy, but it wasn’t anything that would disturb the meal, plus it was obvious he was dealing with a few regulars with his boisterous actions.
Always a win here, and I will be back… again… and again…
Joe Tecce’s Ristorante
Posted by nedster in Entertainment, Food, Opinion on 2009/08/03
Now, normally I don’t like to write a bad review of any restaurant, I will generally just keep my opinion to myself and save my posts for praise of a good or great meal/restaurant. I need to make an exception this time for Joe Tecce’s Ristorante on the edge of Boston’s North End. I write this as a customer with extensive experience as a waiter in a restaurant who knows what it takes to wait on a table especially a large party that you are virtually dedicated to because of it’s size.
We headed there for dinner this past Friday night with a group of about 16 people. We were seated at 2 different tables and were working on 2 separate checks, our choice on the checks. One table was basically the kids table with their wranglers and one table the adults table.
First off, the menus are completely screwy with how they are laid out. They lack order and don’t follow the general flow of a meal the way a “normal” menu would be laid out for an Italian restaurant. Antipasto, then salads/soups, pastas, entress, desserts. Theirs had some entrees on the first page, salads/soups on the second, antipasto on the third, pastas on the fourth, and then some entrees and then desserts. Confusing to say the least!
Drink orders went sorta mostly ok, the service of them was very slow. Refills for water or soda were no quicker, and she didn’t seem to be able to remember who ordered what drink.
The ordering of the meal went mostly ok, the waitress did the normal start with one person, and then work your way around the table getting everyone’s orders. Then came the wait, it seemed like forever for the meals to come out, and when it did it was pure chaos! She had no idea who ordered what! She had a list in front of her, with everyone’s order, in order from first person to last person. She couldn’t figure out who ordered what, so she was yelling off what she held in her hand while waving it around hoping someone would tell her “hey that’s mine” meanwhile she is staring right at her list of who ordered what. It had been so long since we had ordered that many people forgot exactly what they had ordered, so meals got mixed up when one person was given a chicken marsala when they ordered a chicken parmesian because all they could remember was they had chicken in the name of it. Also unfortunately, the kids, usually the most anxious group of people while waiting for dinner were some of the last people to get their food.
The food itself, well, it gets a giant MEH from me, it wasn’t bad, but for the $30 that I dropped for the Veal Medallions with Proscuitto and Mozzarella, I was extremely disappointed. The medallions themselves were good, but when the waitress was rattling off the specials to us from memory instead of having them written down, she somehow failed to mention they were going to be covered in a mushroom and artichoke hearts sauce. I was certainly shocked when it arrived that way. I was also disappointed when I ordered and was told that it did not come with a salad since when she was rattling off the specials she said that it came with a salad and choice of pasta. The choice in pasta did not come with a choice of sauces though, and along with incredibly small size of the side of pasta, this was an extreme disappointment.
While other people’s meals were larger, I did try some of the chicken parm that kate had ordered, while it was tasty, it didn’t really strike me as anything exceptional.
Overall, underwhelmed doesn’t even come close to describing my experiences at Joe Tecce’s Ristorante. I will not be back.
